Background
The partial basement rooms, adjacent to the sunken garden of the West access to the castle, are being converted into offices. Herstmonceux Castle was originally a manor house, dating back to the 12th Century, but in the mid-15th Century the owner partitioned the crown for the right to fortify his manor and subsequently became a castle. Today the castle is home to the Bader International Study Centre providing education for students from around the world. The castle hosts many conferences throughout the year and also provides B&B accommodation within the estate.
